What are the signs of a dental emergency?
-
Toothache. See your dentist as soon as possible if you are feeling pain. There could be different causes behind a toothache — your dentist will help you treat it and find relief before it gets worse.
-
A loose tooth. Adults should never have loose teeth. A loose tooth may be caused by an injury or an infection. In either case, you need help from a dentist.
-
Bleeding gums. If your gums are bleeding/aching, it could be a sign of gum disease.
-
Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth. If left untreated, these may cause bacteria in the tooth, which could lead to a serious infection.
-
Sore jaw. If you have a swollen jaw, it could be a sign of infection. You may also notice a bad taste in your mouth.
-
Dental abscess. Symptoms include fever, a bad taste in your mouth, pus, and/or swelling. If you have any of these, seek immediate medical attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifies as a dental emergency?
Any condition that causes severe pain, bleeding, or risk of infection is considered an emergency. Common examples include abscesses, broken teeth, or knocked-out teeth.
How quickly should I see a dentist after a dental injury?
Ideally, within 30–60 minutes. The sooner you receive care, the higher the chance of saving your tooth and preventing complications.
Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?
Emergency rooms can provide pain relief but not dental treatment. Contact our Overland Park emergency dentists for immediate dental care.
What if I don’t have insurance?
You can still receive care. We offer affordable payment options, including our in-house membership plan and CareCredit.
How can I prevent dental emergencies?
Maintain regular checkups, wear a mouthguard during sports, and avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens.
